What is an Email Sequence?
An email sequence is a series of emails to your audience with a specific goal in mind. A welcome email sequence introduces your audience to who you are and what you do. A sales email sequence allows you to promote a product or service that you offer. If you want to tell your audience something important or exciting in a strategic, personalized way, an email sequence is a perfect way to do it. A great email sequence is kind of like an essay, with an introduction, body, & resolution. All wrapped up nicely with a little note that reads thank you for being here.
Typically your subscribers will receive your email sequence after they sign up for your email list, download a free resource (lead magnet), or make a purchase from you. How they sign up for your list will be a good indicator of what email content they would like to receive from you.
Why Do I Need An Email Sequence?
Listen – we get it. Sometimes sitting down to write and knock out emails can feel really hard, but we promise your email sequence is worth it. Once you’ve set your sequence up, it will run on it’s own, without you having to lift a finger.
When you write your email sequence, you are setting up an automatic way to connect with your audience. You can only have a successful business if you have clients, buyers, or readers that want to come back. People we build a long-lasting relationship with. That is what an email sequence will help you achieve.
How to Write an Awesome Email Sequence
Email #1: Your Welcome Email
Who are you writing to? Knowing your audience is a big deal and it will help you market to them in the future. In the same way, your audience wants to know who you are, too! Give a brief introduction. Tell them who you are and how you help them. People want to know who they are hearing from. A welcome email may be the first email they have ever read from you, so it’s important to keep it short, but make it count.
Give readers a sneak peek into the heart behind why you are writing this for them in the first place. You can also include information on where they can find you on social media, etc. Establishing that relationship will be super beneficial for both you and your reader.
Email #2: The Call-to-Action
Now that you’ve established your trustworthiness, trust your audience to follow through. This is your chance to tell them about your services, a new product, or ask them questions about what they’d like to see from you. Your call to action in this message is important because if you give your audience a reason to keep tuning in, they will.
When you talk about what you do or what you offer, try to include a bit of social proof. This is a great place to include a review from a previous client, buyer, or reader to show your audience what it’s like to work with or buy from you.
Talk about what your audience needs. Make an offer. Show them your value. Then end with a question to keep the conversation going!
Email #3: Re-Engagement
You’re almost there…
This last step is SUPER important – follow-up. We can’t emphasize this enough!
Hold your audience accountable by checking back in on the offer or call-to-action that you shared. Add a personal snippet or story to keep building trust. Thank them for being there and give them a little valuable nugget to take with them. (A tip, resource, recommendation, etc.) This lets them know that even if they don’t buy now, you will still continue providing value and they should stick around.
Don’t Forget Your Subject Lines!
You NEED a good subject line for each email in your sequence. They need to capture your reader’s attention and make your email seem irresistible.
Here are some examples:
- “This is for YOU…”
- “We have an announcement…”
- “Today is the day!”
- “We can’t wait to show you this.”
If you can at least get someone to open your email, they’ll be more inclined to read through it. Can you think of some subject lines that have caught your eye recently?
Consistency is Key
Now that you’ve written 3 awesome emails, keep going. Create an email automation with your email marketing service provider. (We love Mailchimp or Flodesk.) Then, send out regular messages that are helpful to your entire list as it keeps growing. Consistency is key when growing an audience that wants to stay in touch with you.
You’ve got this! We can’t wait to see you grow your list.
